Email Template Pricing

Hi!

What’s a normal price to charge for an email template?

Thanks!

Just using this space as an opportunity to ask—where can I learn more about email design and execution?

I do $150, same as an ad

An email template or an eblast?
If it’s a template, do they want you to set it up / upload to their email service provider (like mailchimp etc)? Or will they be doing it themselves?

For clients who want an eblast (basically and ad formatted for email) I generally charge a whole lot less, compared to a job for someone who wants an email system set up with reusable templates etc within Brevo, Mailchimp or the like.

I find there are roughly 2 types of email design, at least from a graphic designer POV.

One is just the technicality of turning an ad into an email. Usually entails adding a click here button, and resizing the ad to be more narrow then typically used for print, so that it displays well.

The other type of email design is actually setting up a designed system, say for a store that sends out regular product updates, or a school weekly newsletter. These need to be designed within an email service provider in order to display properly.

Within this category, there are many available systems that offer easy to learn drag-and-drop kind of setups such as Brevo, Mailchimp, Constant Contact. You can set up a trial account to play around and get familiar. It isn’t hard, and you can upload different design elements as jpegs etc, although for text you don’t want to do that…

When I introduce clients to these systems, I usually factor in a charge for the hand-holding involved in onboarding their contact lists (sometimes segmenting them) and then walking them through how to use the various templates that I set up…

They actually have a mailchimp account. To create a template on it would I use their account? I’ve never done this before…

Ideally yes. Request access to their account, then go into mailchimp and set up a template. You can bring pretty jpegs into the template for the header areas etc. but for the most part the text should be typed directly into the email. This way it’ll be responsive on all devices. You also want to set up a header / footer with their branding.
