Hi,
I have to design a large rug for an event – approximately 3m x 12m. Do I set the file size to this measurement?! Or do I do it on a much smaller scale and the carpet printer (or whatever you call a guy who prints onto carpets lol) will resize it appropriately?
If it’s vector you shouldn’t need to create it in such a big size, just use the same dimensions. I don’t have any experience with designing carpets though
I would size it at actual size.
I usually design it at a smaller proportion just so my file isn’t so heavy, and then enlarge when it’s ready for print.
I never did carpets, but I did this for window wraps on a building…
It’s not vector – I’m using a purchased image (because it’s the same design as the invitation for this event). I hope it won’t be too fuzzy when blown up, but hopefully that could be mistaken for the pile of the carpet…! If it even has any pile – let’s hope it does
I can’t even size it at actual size because it’s 20m long, and the max document size in AI is much much smaller.
I think I’ll just have to design it to scale and hope and pray that the quality won’t deteriorate terribly once the carpet guys enlarge it
To clarify – earlier, I said 12m which is the length of a carpet runner. 20m is the length of the main carpet in the entrance hall.
Actually if you make a new document you could do a very large canvas!
I opened a new document and put in my measurements, but it rejected it…?
Can you send a screenshot?
Do you have creative cloud?
Nope…
Hmm it’s probably something only on the newer versions…
I guess just make it the biggest possible, and ask them if that’s ok
Do you think resolution will be badly risked? I bought the largest file size, a tiff at 6063 x 4027
Not sure what the measurements of that is in inches/feet…
I would make a clipping mask with a small square, and then enlarge it to the size it will be printed at and check the quality… let me know if that needs explanation
I did once a massive for a store front. The printer gave me their dimension, i think it was 1:10.
I may be mistaken, but I would imagine that a carpet would make any image look pixelated as it is anyway. no?
Thanks Goldie, Schlomith, very helpful.
Al1 – I need to check with the carpet guys if the carpet has any pile, in which case you’re right, quality matters less. But it’s a one-time-use carpet so it might be very flat.
If you need to use a smaller artboard than the actual size it will be printed at, you can increase the resolution proportionally.
For example, if your artboard is half the actual size of the carpet, use a 600 ppi resolution.
The carpet guy might also have recommendations for lowest recommended ppi, it’s possible that they’ll ok lower than 300 ppi.
Thanks Chani, I did not know that!
I’ve been told to set my artboard size to 1/10th of the actual size, so I can’t increase it proportionately because that would be way too high, but setting it higher in general sounds like a smart idea.
Pleasure
I just tried it for curiosity’s sake and does work to set artboard to 3,000 ppi…
Hatzlacha!!
